Dessa två fragment är allt som finns kvar av en målning av Kristus som bär korset av Jean Hey, den ledande målaren som arbetade i Frankrike i slutet av 15-talet. Saint John the Evangelist förvärvades av Chicago-samlaren Martin Ryerson på 1890-talet; Mourning Virgin, som nyligen identifierades som ett fragment av samma verk, förvärvades 2004. Teknisk undersökning visade spår av korset och Kristi huvud på båda fragmenten och gav också bevis för att koppla dem till en annan panel i Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, föreställande ett helgon och en donator. Dessa fragment var alltså tidigare en del av en intensivt känslomässig bild av Kristi väg till Golgata, som skulle ha utgjort den vänstra halvan av en diptyk, eller bärbar hopfällbar altartavla, med representationen av givaren i bön till höger.

The beyond 510 year-old original had the following size: 10 13/16 × 7 7/8 tum (27,5 × 19,9 cm); bild: 10 3/8 × 7 1/4 tum (26,3 × 18,4 cm). What is more, the alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait and has an image ratio of 1 : 1.4, meaning that the length is 29% shorter than the width.
