Woman with a Book is a painting created by Jonas Welch Holman. The painting had the following size: 70,8 × 54,6 cm (27 7/8 × 21 1/2 tum) och målades med mediet olja på gul poppelpanel. Dessutom ingår konststycket i konstsamlingen av Art Institute Chicago. De modern konst allmängods konstverk levereras med tillstånd av Art Institute Chicago. Jonas Holman arbetade som porträttmålare, författare, läkare och predikant och försörjde sig genom dessa kallelser när han reste bland baptistförsamlingar. År 1827 hade han tagit sig till Philadelphia där han målade sju kända porträtt, bland dem Kvinna med en bok och Man med en penna. I dessa verk ersatte Holman en lysande, tofsad gardin för en enkel bakgrund. Han visade sina barnvakter i målade "fantastiska" stolar, med breda, grekiska väckelseskenor, liknande målade möbler tillverkade i Philadelphia eller Baltimore. Liksom Ammi Phillips använde Holman rekvisita som pekade på sittarnas lärdom; han koncentrerade sig också på detaljerna i sina sitters kostymer, och visade kvinnor med ringar och örhängen och män med pinnar fästa på cravats.
