J. Ottis Adams föddes i Amity, Indiana och bosatte sig med sin familj i Shelbyville, Indiana. Den unge Adams var fascinerad av konst och ägnade mycket av sin tid åt att rita. Han skrev in sig på Wabash College men lämnade ett år senare för att studera konst vid South Kensington School i London där han kom under inflytande av John Constable och Joseph Mallord William Turner, vars landskap var av särskilt intresse för Adams. Han återvände till Indiana och bosatte sig i Muncie. År 1880 reste Adams till München för att studera vid Royal Academy med andra Indiana-konstnärer Theodore Clement Steele och Samuel Richards. Adams studerade teckning och målning vid akademin och startade sedan sin egen ateljé i München. När han återvände till Indiana 1887, startade Adams en studio i Muncie och började undervisa i konstklasser. 1889 öppnade han och konstnärskollegan William Forsyth Muncie Art School, som varade i två år. Adams deltog i en gruppshow med Hoosier-artister som reste från Indianapolis till Chicago. En kritiker dubbade konstnärerna i utställningen The Hoosier Group. Två år senare bildade Adams, Forsyth och Steele tillsammans med andra konstnärer i området Society of Western Artists, den första organisationen som ägnade sig åt att marknadsföra regionens konstnärers arbete. År 1898 köpte Adams och TC Steele ett hus i Brookville, Indiana, senare känt som Hermitage. 1901 blev Adams en av de första lärarna vid det nybyggda John Herron Art Institute där han undervisade från 1902 till 1906. Under den senare delen av sitt liv arbetade Adams i Florida och Michigan samt Brookville.

Late Autumn conveys a misty November morning near the banks of the Whitewater not far from Adams’s Brookville home. The painting was purchased from the Eleventh Annual Exhibition of the Society of Western Artists. The Society held annual exhibitions until 1914 at six Midwestern cities. The John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, was the Indianapolis venue for the Society’s exhibitions. Many works by Midwestern artists, including Late Autumn were acquired from the museum’s contemporary collection from these exhibitions.
