Antoine, Louis, and Mathieu Le Nain were brothers who ran a collective studio in Paris from around 1630 until 1648, when Antoine and Louis died. Mathieu continued to produce work under their name "Le Nain" throughout the 1650s. Of the museum's four paintings that have been called "Le Nain" (1958.174, 1958.175.1, 1958.175.2), this work has held its attribution to Mathieu the longest. With his back to the viewer, a musician sits in shadow while a group of children pose patiently in a chain-like formation, awaiting the start of their dance. Because of its reliance on order and collaboration, dancing symbolized familial harmony. The attention to the individuality of the children suggest a family portrait, while their wistful expressions and melancholic tone have led to the hypothesis that the children are portraits-both living and posthumous. The description of the intricate lace and the wearied expressions of the slim boys is characteristic of Mathieu's handling. However, the canvas has been attributed to one of Mathieu's followers, the Master of the Games, because of the static, brightly lit figures whose elongated shadows don't quite describe their forms. --Hannah Segrave (October 2013)

  • Duk: The canvas direct print is a printed cotton canvas stretched on a wooden frame. It creates a distinctive look of three-dimensionality. Besides, canvas print generates a homelike, pleasant look. A printed canvas of this masterpiece will give you the opportunity of transforming your own art print into a large collection piece like you would see in a gallery. Canvas Prints have the great advantage of being relatively low in weight, meaning that it is easy to hang the Canvas print without additional wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suitable for all kinds of walls in your home.
  • Metall (aluminium dibond tryck): Aluminium Dibond prints are metal prints with an outstanding effect of depth, creating a fashionable look with a non-reflective surface structure. A direct Aluminium Dibond Print is your ideal start to art prints with aluminum. The white & bright parts of the original artwork shimmer with a silk gloss, however without glare. Colors are bright and vivid, details appear clear and crisp, and there’s a matte look that you can literally feel. This direct print on Aluminum Dibond is one of the most popular entry-level products and is a contemporary way to display art prints, because it puts 100% of the viewer’s attention on the whole artwork.
  • Tryckt akrylglas: A glossy print on acrylic glass, often named a UV print on plexiglass, will transform your favorite original artwork into lovely wall decoration. In addition, it forms a distinct alternative to aluminium or canvas fine art replicas. With an acrylic glass fine art print contrasts and smaller details become exposed thanks to the granular gradation of the print.
  • Affisch (dukmaterial): The poster is a printed flat cotton canvas paper with a slight surface structure. Please keep in mind, that depending on the size of the canvas poster print we add a white margin between 2-6 cm around the print motif in order to facilitate the framing with your custom frame.

Viktig juridisk anmärkning: We try everything to describe the art products as closely as possible and to demonstrate them visually on the various product detail pages. Still, the pigments of the print materials, as well as the imprint might vary slightly from the image on your device's screen. Depending on your screen settings and the condition of the surface, colors might not be printed as exactly as the digital version on this website. Because all our fine art prints are processed and printed manually, there might as well be minor differences in the motif's size and exact position.
